Retirement is supposed to bring peace.
For Huw Miller, it brings suspicion.
The Game takes a simple idea and turns it into an unsettling psychological thriller. A retired detective becomes convinced that his new neighbour is the notorious Ripton Stalker, the serial predator who escaped justice years earlier. The question isn’t simply whether Huw is right. It’s whether years of living with an unsolved case have finally blurred the line between instinct and obsession.
Jason Watkins gives Huw a vulnerability that makes him impossible to dismiss, even when those around him begin questioning his judgement. At the same time, Robson Green plays Patrick Harbottle with just enough warmth and ambiguity to keep you constantly second-guessing everything you think you know.
What I enjoyed most was that the series refuses to reveal its hand too quickly. It quietly asks us whether experience should always be trusted, or whether the ghosts of old investigations can continue haunting detectives long after they have left the job.
Sometimes the greatest mystery isn’t whether the suspect is guilty.
It’s whether the detective has finally begun doubting himself.
