Not every detective needs to brood in the rain.
Madamoiselle Holmes brings something lighter to French crime television while still delivering clever mysteries. Inspired by the legacy of Sherlock Holmes, the series mixes deduction, humour and character in a way that feels playful rather than overly serious.
Unlike the darker French dramas I’ve watched, this one enjoys itself. The investigations are still engaging, but there’s a sense that the audience is invited along for the puzzle rather than weighed down by it.
The modern French setting also gives the series its own identity. Familiar streets, cafés and neighbourhoods become the backdrop for stories that feel contemporary without losing the charm associated with classic detective fiction.
It won’t replace the intensity of Astrid et Raphaëlle or the realism of Le Bureau des Légendes, but it doesn’t try to. Instead, it occupies its own space: intelligent, entertaining and refreshingly light.
Sometimes that’s exactly what a detective series should be.
