I never expected to say this, but I am forever in debt to the Polish for widening my drama horizons.
The Heritage only confirmed that I had found a corner of European crime dram I wanted to explore further.
The Thaw was one of those series I did not see coming. I went in expecting a dark crime drama. I came out feeling as if I had opened a completely new corner of European television.
Set in Szczecin, with the cold, the river, the grey skies and the kind of silence that already feels suspicious, this drama knows exactly how to pull you in. It does not shout. It freezes you slowly.
At the centre of it is Detective Katarzyna Zawieja, investigating the murder of a young woman whose newborn baby has disappeared. But as with all good European crime dramas, the crime is never only the crime. It is the thing that cracks open everything else.
The past moves through this story like cold air under a door. Slowly, slowly, it meets the present. Old choices, buried secrets, family pain, political weight, personal grief — everything starts coming closer. And the more the investigation moves forward, the more it feels as if nobody is really living in the present. They are all dragging something behind them.
What I loved most was the atmosphere. Dark days and even darker nights. No glamour, no shiny detective fantasy, no city pretending to be prettier than it is. Just winter, water, concrete, grief and people trying to survive what they know.
And this is where Polish drama really surprised me. There is a seriousness to it. A weight. The story does not rush to entertain you; it makes you sit inside its coldness. It trusts the silence. It trusts the faces. It trusts that a good crime drama can be painful without becoming melodramatic.
For me, The Thaw is exactly why I started watching outside the obvious countries. Because every time I think I know where good European drama lives, another country steps forward and says: excuse me, we have stories too.
And Poland did not just bring me a good story.
It brought me a past that slowly meets the future, a city that feels frozen in more ways than one, and a crime drama that reminded me there are still whole television worlds I have not properly entered yet.
