After The Thaw, I thought I had understood the kind of darkness Polish drama could give me.
Then came The Heritage, and Poland said: no, no, we also do family poison by the sea.
This drama has everything I love when it is done properly. A death. A will. Children who clearly carry more resentment than grief. A family name that means something in the town. A beautiful coastal place that does not feel peaceful at all. And the sea — always there, always watching, always ready to return what people thought they had buried.
Set in Hel, a Polish seaside town with a name that already sounds like a warning in English, The Heritage uses its location brilliantly. This is not the sunny, romantic version of the coast. This is grey water, hard weather, family businesses, political ambition, old wounds and people who know too much about each other.
The death of Johnny Mróz should be the end of something. Instead, it becomes the beginning of everything falling apart.
His children are not just grieving a father. They are circling an inheritance, a legacy, a family history, and each other. And that is where the drama becomes interesting. Because inheritance is never only money. It is also bitterness. It is reputation. It is the version of the family story everyone agreed to pretend was true.
What I really liked is how The Heritage does not treat family as something soft or sacred. Family here is pressure. Family is debt. Family is the place where people learn how to lie before they even understand they are lying.
And then, of course, there is the crime.
A body in the water. Secrets rising. The past refusing to stay polite.
This is what Polish drama is starting to give me: stories where the atmosphere is not decoration. It is part of the crime. The weather, the houses, the sea, the silence between relatives — all of it feels involved.
The Heritage is dark, but not in a theatrical way. It is dark in that everyday family way, where everyone knows something, everyone hides something, and nobody is as innocent as they want to appear.
Poland is very quickly becoming one of those countries I did not expect to follow, but now I am paying attention.
Because clearly, they have stories. And I need to watch season 2.
