Australia has become one of the biggest surprises on my crime drama map.
After Secret City, I expected another intelligent story. Black Snow offered something completely different, yet equally compelling.
Set in tropical Queensland, it breaks away from the cold landscapes we often associate with crime dramas. The sun shines, the skies are blue and the scenery feels almost idyllic. Yet beneath that warmth lies a decades-old murder that continues to cast its shadow over an entire community.
One of the things I appreciated most was how the story moves between past and present without losing its rhythm. Every new revelation adds another layer, slowly exposing how a single tragedy can shape generations.
It also reminded me that darkness isn’t measured by the weather. Nordic noir taught me to associate crime with snow, rain and endless nights. Black Snow proves that bright sunshine can hide just as many secrets.
Australia continues to surprise me. Whether it’s political conspiracies in Canberra or unsolved murders in tropical Queensland, it has quietly earned its place among my favourite destinations for crime drama.
A Personal Note: There are actors who bring order to the chaos. And then there is Travis Fimmel.
The moment he appears on screen, I’m already reaching for the ice cream and biting my nails. You just know trouble is coming. It’s almost impossible to imagine him living a quiet, uncomplicated life.
This time it’s Australia. It’s hot, humid and sweaty. He drinks too much, barely eats properly, his brother has disappeared and his father is an absolute nightmare. The story has barely begun and I’m already having mild panic attacks.
Perhaps that’s Travis Fimmel’s greatest talent. Before the mystery has even found its rhythm, he somehow convinces you that absolutely nothing is going to be alright.
